- I stayed in a hostel on Kauai....very cheap like $20 a night. It is in a safe area (mostly everywhere on Kauai is) and it is like right on the beach. But you share the bathroom and the bedroom is like one big room. But fairly clean. You put your own clean sheets they give you on the bed. Don't know if you've ever stayed at a Hostel...this was only the second one I stayed at. Very laid back people, just you don't have the privacy you may want. But you don't stay at your hotel all day unless u wanna stay at one of the fancy places. So who really cares...it's so cheap. I forgot the name of it but if u wanna know e-mail me and then I will look for it at home. joannmarie77@yahoo.com

- I have been looking into hostels on Kauai for my son & have found these 2 websites. I would recommend doing some web searches & looking at user reviews. The first place has reviews that are all over the board. People seem to either love or hate the place. I haven't found any reviews on the 2nd place yet. http://www.vrbo.com/global/siteFrame.asp?mainurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.kauaiinternationalhostel.com&returnurl=/861 http://www.kauai-blue-lagoon.com/ PS, the 2nd poster's recommendations look like Big Island locations to me.
- When my bf's mother came to stay, we put her up in the Kauai Palms hotel. It's not a resort, doesn't have a pool or anything fancy, but it's clean and a great place to stay if you all you need is someplace clean to sleep while you spend the rest of the time out sightseeing. It's close to the airport, and right next to two of the best places to eat on the island, Hamura Saimin and BBQ Inn, great local food at a good price. It's $75 a night, about half the price you'll pay at bigger resorts or condos, and has a good central location in Lihue right off Rice St. so it'll take you the same amount of time to get to North shore and West side. Here's a website for you to check out: http://www.kauaipalmshotel.com/ If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. Hope that was helpful ^.^ PS- This is for both you and Boomer Gal. After taking a look at her links, I know where both of those places are, and can't say I recommend either of them. The first is the International Hostel, located in Kapaa Town right behind Bubba Burgers and De Ja Va surf shop, and the place is over run with hippies. The second is down the road from the first, next to Scotty's Beachside BBQ (horrible place to eat, they discriminate) and has a reputation for housing druggies. My bf used to work at Scotty's and he said after they closed people would come over from there and ask for free food and tweek in the parking lot.
- Kauai is a fascinating island where your can visit by most of the places by air. I think so you can contact the Alohabound adventures company to get assitance regarding cheap hotels.
