Which island to visit in Hawaii -- Maui or Kauai?
We're thinking of going to Hawaii, but we'll only have 2 days to spend there, so we must choose 1 island. We've narrowed it down to Maui and Kauai. My husband has already been to the big island. I've never been to Hawaii. I'm interested in Hawaiian culture, food, and beaches. I'd like to see some hula dancing, local arts, and maybe go to a luau. I'd also like to visit a nice tropical beach that isn't crowded or dirty. My husband is interested in views and would like to go hiking up a mountain. Both of us are fairly athletic, so we'd be open to trying most outdoor activities. Neither of us is interested in bars or partying, but we wouldn't mind a few pina coladas. The Kauai flight will give us the most time in Hawaii, but I'm wondering if Kauai will have the hula dancers, the luau, etc. because I've heard it's less popular with tourists. If we went to Maui we'd have a little less time to spend, but I thought we might also be able to visit Molokai. Any feedback is appreciated!

- There was more to do on Maui but Kaui was more peaceful.
- both have the tourist scene, luaus etc. at the larger hotels. you can go to their luaus w/out having to stay there. both islands have hiking. maui also has horseriding. both have wonderful beaches ...waterfalls...kayaking if kauai gives you more time go for kauai & go to maui another day.... here's a link for kauai hotels b&b's etc so you can get an idea http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g29218-Kauai_Hawaii-Hotels.html you can also look up the maui hotels & b&b's
- I would definately go to Kauai, I have been to Hawaii twice, this island is beautiful and deverce, the temp on the NE is cool 80 and on the NW very hot, it is less comercial than other islands but has more beaches than the Big Island, there are mountains on Kauai as well, all the hotels offer luau's ( not what you see in the movies) with dancers and a show and a pig cooked in the ground with tradional food. A must do. If you are looking for a secluded beach Kauai is the place.
- Definitely go to Kauai. There are many of the the things to do that you mentioned. I went to 3 luaus when I was there. The Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau was the best. http://honuhawaiiactivities.com/luaus/smiths-luau-kauai-p-56.html?gclid=CM649oD5k48CFQ4FEgodPU3Iew I always felt Maui is more of a party spot than for relaxing.
- Maui is better if you like a city buzz -- restaurants, bars, etc. But I love Kauai -- it looks like what I pictured Hawaii to look like in my mind's eye. Lush, exotic. Do you have a place to stay? I stayed at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation condos on Poipu beach and absolutely LOVED it. I strongly prefer condos to hotels in Hawaii -- mostly because I like having a fridge full of cold soda and I can fix my own breakfast.
- I personaly love kauai it seems less touristy to be and its very lush and green lots of mountains..I stayed in sealodge condos unit d7 the owner was wonderful. The condo was nice and clean with amazing views.I didnt go to a luau on kauai because i went on oahu. Kauai dosent have much of a nite life but your not really into bars and partying so it will be perfect. The drive up to waimea canyon is awesome so is fern grotto.I think youll love it.
