Kauai Fun Vacations

American Airlines Change fee????

Ok, so I have a summer class at my college and at the end of it my professor and my class go for an 8 day adventure in Hawaii on the island kauai from june-25th to july-2nd. I have a friend that lives on that island and I’m looking at staying an extra week. Unfortunately my professor said the travel agent that put the flights together said that American won't re-ticket me out of the group for more than a three day difference. Also, that if I get re-ticketed, I lose my spot on the class flight there which is completely full. She also said that the best thing to do is to stay with this ticket and then rebook a return ticket when I get to Lihue on whatever date I want to return (which is July 11th) and pay the change fee. 1. What would this change fee be? 2. DO you think this is the best way to get this to work out so I can stay an extra week?

  1. The change fee depends on the original fare purchased -- typically, it's around $100, but it could be more or less depending on the fare's rules. It sounds like your professor is suggesting what I would suggest -- to wait until you get to Hawaii to rebook the return. If you do that, you're only subject to the change fee and not any fare difference. If you were to rebook the return now, the entire ticket would have to be rebooked, which would not only invoke the change fee, but also the fare difference (which sounds as if it would be incredibly high, if that flight is full). You will definitely want to wait until you get there to rebook the return ticket.
